Information on the Jazz, Blues Festival in Maryland

The Jazz and Blues Festival takes place in the historic Federal Hill neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. It is held annually on a Sunday in June. The festival features two outdoor stages, crafts and food and drink vendors. Two bands are always playing, guaranteeing continuous entertainment. The theme of the day is jazz and blues, but there are also some funk and country groups to even things out. There are local bands along with bands from as far away as New Orleans and Delaware. Admission is free.

In 2000, Federal Hill Main Street became a revitalization project in one of Baltimore's oldest neighborhoods, according to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The project brings four different festivals to the neighborhood every year, boosting the economy and highlighting the unique culture and history of Federal Hill.

The Jazz and Blues Festival isn't always held on the same weekend, but it has historically been on a Sunday in the month of June. According to the Hilton Baltimore-BWI Airport Blog, in 2009 it started at 11 a.m. and continued with entertainment until 7 p.m.

The festival features as many as 12 bands in an afternoon. In addition, numerous street vendors sell food, drinks, jewelry and crafts. Entertainment and activities for younger children are also offered, making it family friendly and accessible for most.

Federal Hill is located in South Baltimore, which contains numerous tourist attractions, including museums, aquariums and stadiums. According to the Historic Federal Hill Main Street website, it also has the benefit of being accessible by the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, Interstate 83 and Interstate 95. Public transit also makes it easy to get there from anywhere in the greater Baltimore area.

The Jazz and Blues Festival isn't the largest music festival in the area during the summer. However, the respectable number of bands coupled with other historic and regional attractions would likely make it a compelling option when planning your next vacation in the Baltimore area.
